From a sartorial standpoint, there was much to discuss after Wednesday’s inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris: Lady Gaga’s “Hunger Games”-style gold bird brooch. Ella Emhoff’s bedazzled plaid Miu Miu coat. Michelle Obama’s voluminous blowout. Yet it was Sen. Bernie Sanders’s practical winter accessories that had everybody talking—and flexing their graphic design muscles.
After being spotted in the crowd wearing a light brown Burton parka and handmade mittens, a gift from a Vermont schoolteacher, a photo of the senator sitting with his arms crossed in a folding chair quickly became the meme of the day. (For those confused, a meme, according to Merriam-Webster, is “an amusing or interesting item (such as a captioned picture or video) or genre of items that is spread widely online especially through social media.”) Images began popping up online of Sen. Sanders photoshopped into famous movie scenes, album covers and historical photos.
Soon, local businesses began creating their own memes of the Vermont senator. Here are a few of our favorite photos featuring Sen. Sanders at different locations across Montgomery County.
