Golf clubs swing and balls fly at Quincy’s Golf & Social in Gaithersburg. Guests munched on calamari and burgers as they cheered on their World Cup team on TV in July.
The indoor golf course-restaurant hybrid opened in March, taking over the Kentlands space that formerly housed Not Your Average Joe’s. The Quincy’s Group owns two existing restaurants in Montgomery County — Gaithersburg and North Potomac.
The new location’s website promises the “same people behind it” and “a room worth coming back for.”
Quincy’s Golf & Social is the first of the locations to also offer golf simulators.
“We toyed around with doing something different than just the regular restaurant business,” says Quincy’s co-owner Alexis Magill.
The family-friendly eatery is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and happy hour, serving up ever-popular smash burgers, dinner entrees, sandwiches — chicken avocado is the fan favorite — and standard pub grub.
“We do a lot with burgers and wings, but we also have a fantastic pork chop, we think the best pork chop around,” Magill says. “Most of our customers agree.”
Chef Jose Del Cid, who makes cheesecakes in-house, is “fresh-food-driven,” according to Magill.
“Not many things are frozen,” she says of the food.
Even the coffee served at Quincy’s is fresh and locally roasted — their coffee beans come from Quartermaine Coffee Roasters, a specialty roaster based in Rockville.
But the food isn’t the only draw for the restaurant. Golf enthusiasts or anyone looking to spend time with family, friends or coworkers can rent a state-of-the-art golf bay for groups of up to five. The TrackMan-powered simulator bays allow golfers to “play” courses from around the world.
“It’s a different type of atmosphere here because you get people coming in to golf instead of coming in to eat, which prolongs their stay,” Magill says. “A lot of times, somebody will rent a bay for an hour and come out afterwards and sit down and eat.”
Customers can also eat in the bays using foldable tables.
Nineteen flat-screen TVs broadcast a variety of sports games throughout the restaurant, on the back patio and above the bar, which serves beer, wine and cocktails. Quincy’s caters for large events and offers space for parties to dine in.
Magill and her husband, Martin, have been in the food and beverage industry “their whole lives.” They successfully resurrected the “struggling” Quincy’s Gaithersburg after purchasing the business in 2008. After years of double-digit growth, the Magills purchased a second Montgomery County location in 2014.
Quincy’s Bar & Grille, off Quince Orchard Road in Gaithersburg, became a hub for the Quince Orchard athletics community.
“We got friendly with [QO] families and coaches, so they all still come to the original Quincy’s after [sports] games,” Magill says. “We’ll see what happens this year. I think it’s going to be divided.”
Dubbed “the Q” by locals, the original Gaithersburg location also hosts special events such as live music, bingo and trivia nights. Magill is ready for a new chapter just up the street.
“[We have a] very, very friendly staff,” Magill adds. “A lot of the staff has worked in the Kentlands, so a lot of people know the staff from working at other [nearby restaurants].”
She estimates that about half of the 30 staff members previously worked at neighboring establishments.
So far, the community has been largely receptive to the new restaurant location, especially by soccer fans looking for a place to catch the World Cup or enjoy a family dinner in a relaxed atmosphere.
“We’re still working on breakfast and lunch, getting established,” Magill says. “It seems that people can’t get the hang of us having breakfast here, so we’re absolutely trying.”
