“Library Anne” Presents: 4 Books To Warm You Up

By Anne Gerlach/Adult Services Librarian/Montgomery County Public Libraries/White Oak Library

As I’m writing post holidays, during a cold, dark part of the year, I’m heartened you’ll read this just before spring.

There’ll be two special observances – Library Lover’s Month (February) and Maryland Day (March 25). As a Marylander, it’s interesting reading about our state – and being a librarian, I have an affinity for books about my career and the librarians within their pages.

It’s like I’ve wandered into a new room of my home and met another relative. There’s
LOADS on these two topics! This is only a taste of what’s available, so bookmark with an eye towards savoring more:

The True Tails of Baker and Taylor: the Library Cats Who Left Their Pawprints on a Small Town…and the World

By Jan Louch
The “purrfect” book to curl up with! James Herriot fans may appreciate the memoirs of these two mousers who were “hired” to keep rodents from encroaching on the new library building in small-town, up-and-coming Minden, Nevada. Taken from the author’s point of view, this nonfiction “tail” reads and acts like a novel (so no index, etc.) but what the audience gets in exchange is an easy read with the added feature of several appealing photographs proving this story took place. Experience the daily life of public library service in the 1980’s (with a feline flair). Get to know the library staff – opening with a childhood episode of near kidnapping! Check out the antics of the “Felix-and-Oscar” pair of Scottish Fold cats. Watch how a once cramped and strapped library, and their neighboring townsfolk, grew as Baker and Taylor made their mark. A treat for literacy fans and animal lovers alike!
