National Book Lovers Day is Monday, Aug. 9. What better way to celebrate than by supporting Montgomery County’s independent bookstores? Whether you want to treat yourself to a new novel or pick up a present for the bookworm in your life, these five local bookshops will help you find the right read.

Second Story Books

Owned by professional antiquarian Allan Stypeck, Second Story has been a continual resource for books, consignments, bookbinding and appraisals for over 40 years. Book lovers can explore over half a million titles — including old and new books, special collections and rare finds — in the shop’s sprawling Rockville warehouse. 12160 Parklawn Drive, Rockville

Kensington Row Bookshop

This vibrant two-story bookstore, only opened on weekends, is home to a range of new, used and “unusual” books, including first and special editions and signed copies. If you’re looking for some locally-themed books, check out the section dedicated to local authors and stories about Washington, D.C., and Maryland. You’ll also find an array of vintage posters, pre-made and customizable bookplates and cards made by local businesses and artists. 3786 Howard Ave., Kensington

Loyalty Bookstore

Situated in downtown Silver Spring, this Black- and Queer-owned bookstore is dedicated to highlighting diverse and marginalized voices. Along with an extensive collection of books, Loyalty also hosts fun book clubs, author talks and other book-related events. During the pandemic, the store launched its “Leap of Faith” subscription box that includes one book by a BIPOC, Queer or disabled writer each season and a meet-and-greet event with the author. 823 Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring

Friends of the Library Bookstore

Friends of the Library, Montgomery County (FOLMC) is a nonprofit that has supported Montgomery County Public Libraries with funding, programs and materials since 1982. To further promote learning in the county, the organization runs two used bookstores that accept daily donations. For $30, you can also purchase a “Book Bundle” that includes six to eight books in a genre or age range and is shipped straight to your door. 4886 Boiling Brook Parkway, Rockville and 11701 Georgia Ave., Wheaton

Wonder Books

This 40-year-old bookstore with three Maryland locations specializes in new, used and rare books, movies, video games, CDs and more. Want to create a stunning bookshelf display? Wonder Books offers a service called “Books by the Foot” that sells unwanted books in bulk as décor and props. 15976 Shady Grove Road, Gaithersburg
