Then and Now: Once Upon a River

Beginning around 1786, White’s Ferry brought people and goods across the Potomac between Montgomery County and Loudoun County, Va. Then came the automobile, as the photo from about 1921 shows. Today, the ferry is closed, having been shut down in a land dispute in 2020. But those who crossed the river before that time remember it as a serene alternative to Washington’s traffic-clogged bridges.
