The D.C. region is known for many things: politics, seafood and history. But, did you know we also are a hotspot for bagels?
At least that’s what Lawn Love’s “2022 Best Cities for Bagel Lovers” list says. Washington D.C. placed 4th out of 158.
The lawn care company ranked the cities based on three metrics: access to places that sell bagels, quality of those places taken from customer reviews and the number of times residents searched for bagels on search engines. They used Google analytics and TripAdvisor to help put together the list.
Of course, New York rolled into the top spot, dominating in every one of the list’s categories to receive an overall score of 87.74. The second closest, San Francisco, was vastly below with an overall of 39.75.
So, what makes a city a bagel haven? Well, the company found that when it came to their accessibility metric, areas with more smaller bagel businesses, not just larger eateries like Panera Bread, saw more customers.
“You can pick up a bagel sandwich at a lot of your standard, brand-named restaurant chains, but it’s really those mom-and-pop shops that bring that uniqueness and put a lot of love into it,” said Lawn Love’s managing editor Sharon Sullivan.
Another contributing factor the study found was that cities with larger concentrations of Jewish Americans tend to place higher in the list. This is no surprise as the doughnut-shaped roll is a long regarded Jewish specialty. The Washington-metro area is the third largest in the United States, according to the Steinhardt Social Research Institute.
If you were wondering how other cities in the region ranked, they were pretty high on the list too!
Northern Virginia cities Alexandria and Arlington placed 19th and 34th, respectively. And Maryland’s Baltimore was rated 60th.
