Montgomery County Radon Testing Requirement: Impact to Home Sales

Effective October 1, a Montgomery County law went into effect that requires radon test screenings for all single family homes and townhouses (not part of a condo association or cooperative) within the county prior to sales closing. Radon is an invisible and undetectable gas, which is the byproduct of uranium in the soil going through the process of radioactive decay. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), after cigarette smoking, radon inhalation is the second leading lung cancer-causing carcinogen in the country. Read more>
The traffic report on the local morning news is always helpful information, but if you want to know where potential traffic headaches may be in the future, the county has the solution. The Montgomery County Department of Transportation has an informative website that lists future road, bridge and bike path projects. Through its Division of Transportation Engineering, the county lists each project in the pipeline along with the project's description, schedule and documents related to a project. Currently, there are 38 projects listed. For more information, click here.

The Montgomery County Department of Liquor Control has been under criticism for a long time over its monopolist control over the county's supply of beer, wine and liquor so it's nice to share some good news - especially for beer lovers - from the control board. It has partnered with Legends Limited of Maryland to reduce the cost of the keg beer in six brand families by an average of 11%. The brands that dropped prices beginning November 1 are Lagunitas, Oskar Blues, Union Anthem, Ballast Point, Duvel, and Baltimore Beer Works.

Thankfully, the election is over, but we can't resist one last look at the stats. No election is perfect and the same can be said about the electorate. If we were perfect, there wouldn't be any over votes or under votes. An over vote occurs when a voter selects more than the maximum number of selections for a specific race. Think of voting for Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. An under vote occurs when the number of choices made by a voter is less than the minimum number allowed or when a voter passes on making a choice for a specific race altogether. Of the nine contested races (presidential, congressional, judicial and board of education), the Trump-Clinton race produced the second most over votes with 618. The contest with the most over votes - the Circuit Court Judicial Circuit 6 where voters were asked to vote for three of three names on the ballot. That one produced 1,116 over votes. For the Foodies in Montgomery County

DAVE & BUSTER'S - Just in time for Thanksgiving, Dave & Buster's plans to open its new Ellsworth Place location in Silver Spring. For those who missed the vibe and excitement of the arcade and restaurant concept since D&B closed its White Flint Mall location more than two years ago, the new D&B's will be 40,000 square-feet of entertainment.

DISH & DRAM - In the space formerly occupied by the Sub Urban Trading Company, the new Dish & Dram offers a seasonal, farm fresh menu and cocktail bar in a casual setting. Owners Zena Polin and Jerry Hollinger are building on their success at The Daily Dish in Silver Spring to bring "comfort food with international flavors" to Kensington.

TOMMY JOE'S - In another flipping of restaurant space, Tommy Joe's has taken over the space occupied by the Boulevard Tavern in The Kentlands. The location has a long history of restaurants, having first served as O'Donnell's Sea Grill before becoming Brasserie Beck, then Boulevard Tavern. The RW Restaurant Group already operates a very successful Tommy Joe's in Bethesda and is banking that the neighborhood bar concept will produce the same result.

He is about 5 years old and lived a lot of his life on a chain. Despite that confinement, Bear has retained a happy, active personality. He is good with other dogs, but not cats. He surely deserves a chance to live a good life now.
