Maryland's party primary election is April 26. While Maryland is not a completely closed primary state, it leaves the choice of whether independent or unaffiliated voters may participate up to the two major political parties. To date, both the Republican and Democratic parties have opted to close their primaries to non-party members.

However, if there are non-partisan offices that are elected in a primary election (i.e., school board), any voter can participate in those elections.

You may change your party affiliation until 21 days before a primary election. This year's deadline is April 5.

Although the legal voting age is 18, you may still be able to vote in the primary even if you haven't reached that milestone. If you are registered to vote and you will be 18 by the general election, you may vote in the primary.

Early voting begins April 14 and the deadline for a registered voter to request a mailed or faxed absentee ballot is April 19. The last day for early voting is April 21. The deadline for a registered voter to request an electronic absentee ballot is April 22.

Need a BIRTHDAY IDEA for the little tyke or teen in your family? Here are three great MoCo businesses that cater to kids' birthdays.

ROCKIN JUMP - The new indoor trampoline park in Gaithersburg is a ton of fun for all ages, but Rockin Jump is especially kid (and birthday) friendly.

ALL FIRED UP - With a location in Bethesda (and Cleveland Park), All Fired Up has a huge selection of pottery to paint. It can accoomodate parties up to 28 kids.

EARTH TREKS - The Rockville center offers private climbing parties for birthday groups. Instructors are with the group for two hours. No experience is necessary.

For the Foodies in Montgomery County
Nalley Fresh – The eighth Maryland location for Nalley Fresh has opened in the Kentlands in Gaithersburg. The fast-casual restaurant allows customers to use their "inner chef" to create fresh bowls, wraps and salads.

Lahinch Tavern – From the owners of the Irish Inn, Lahinch Tavern and Grill brings an Irish flavor to Cabin John Shopping Center in Potomac. Look for a casual bar area for standing and sitting, a white tablecloth restaurant, and a stage for live music.

Tommy Joe's – The Bethesda favorite has a new location - the old Urban Heights on Norfolk Avenue. The second floor location features a dance floor, additional TVs, charging stations for cell phones and an improved menu, thanks to the involvement of chef Robert Wiedmaier.
The city of Rockville has expanded its smoke-free rules to include all city facilities and city parks. The mayor and council voted unanimously last October to the have ban take effect on March 1. Now areas like the plaza in Rockville Town Square (a city-owned park) are smoke-free zones. Privately-owned, outdoor restaurant dining areas adjacent to Town Square and around Rockville will not be affected.
Montgomery County is the nation's 10th wealthiest county, yet there is need throughout our region. Support your neighbors by donating to a county-based charity. This issue's charity is Girls on the Run. Headquartered in Rockville, Girls on the Run provides an interactive, after-school running program for girls in third to eighth grades. A fun, experience-based curriculum designed to build confidence through confidence, it integrates running into a program that seeks to inspire girls to be healthy and confident. The program culminates with the girls completing a celebratory 5K run.
